Country Songs That I Relate To

Updated: Oct 30, 2021

Many people can relate to country music, but for me a lot of it is more about fields and cattle and I'm more mountains and rivers. There are some elements that I can resonate with such as trucks, dirt roads, and if you've listened to any of the songs I've written; drinking alcohol. But most of the time, I am not in the know and have no idea what that kind of life they are singing about is like. So when I find a song that I feel like fits my life, be it something serious or comical it always makes its way into my regular playlist. (I also miss home a lot right now so it's just me in my feels lol)

Quick Disclaimer!

Most if not all of these songs are contemporary country. So don't go into this thinking it is rooted in the oldies. This is all about me discovering new songs and helping my audience find songs they also might relate to and enjoy as well. That is all. Thanks!

So what are the songs and what about them makes me think of my own life? Glad you asked. Let's start with the one that inspired this idea.

1. Huntin' Land - Dustin Lynch (feat. Riley Green)

This came on one morning while I was getting ready for work and the idea gave me a pretty good laugh. The song is about a man dating a girl (and putting up with her) for her family's hunting land. I can see some women taking offense to this concept for a song, but to me it's relatable. There are a lot of guys that became much more interested in me after I've told them my family owns a hunting camp and a significant amount of land to go with it. Now, I don't have a ton of personal experience dating these kinds of men, but there are women in my family that do and let me tell you, my dad came home ever weekend one hunting season telling me all about how I needed to find a man like my cousin's boyfriend who hunts, fishes, and gets into trouble on all the motorized vehicles. This song touches on all the funny aspects that go into a man becoming hunting buddies with his girlfriends dad and that's something I see a lot of where I'm from. Fun tune that has two of my favorite outdoorsman country singers.

2. Famous Friends - Chris Young and Kane Brown

If you're from a small town this song touches on the unique experience of knowing everyone. As a person from a small town myself, who knows basically everyone there are some people that you definitely want to know to have an easier life. The bridge says it all–

"I got friends in high places on these small-town roads

'Cause 'round here it's all about the people that you know"

My best friend and I joke that there are people in my town that are NPC's that you see everywhere and have quests to send you on. But it seems that at least in my town there are those "famous" people that it benefits to know. Knowing the bartender means you always get your drinks right away without having to order them, befriending the popular man that everyone loves (and becoming his honorary sister which is what I somehow managed) ensures that no creeps hit on you. Or in my case no guys hit on you (okay so maybe there are some down sides), and knowing all the small business owners and their families makes it ridiculously easy to get a job. The lyrics in this song depict a whole town of people who have a ton of different professions and accomplishments under their belt. Knowing everyone is a fundamental part of small town life and my life just wouldn't be the same without those kind of connections.

3. REDNECKER - HARDY

The first time I heard this song I laughed, like a lot. Some of my favorite country songs are ones that don't take themselves too seriously and this one is particularly playful. My best friend from college said to me once that this song embodied my personality. And honestly, I can see her point. I did (let's be honest, still do) talk about my home town a lot. I'm very proud of where I came from and I like to think I am inherently more redneck than most of the people I hang out with. I drink a lot of beer, I love NASCAR, I regularly spend hours in the woods, I caught a fish one time. Admittedly, I am not much of a hunter/fisherman but I can cook it up so I feel like that should count for something. This song is all about bragging about how much more of a redneck you are than someone else, and I frequently do that. So I can relate to being REDNECKER.

4. Same Old Song - Riley Green

Recently I have been thinking a lot about where I want to be in my life. This has been something I've struggled with in the most recent years because as you've probably noticed, my heart is in my hometown. I have huge (crazy) dreams and it has always been the case that I would have to leave to accomplish them. This song tells the tale of having all the money in the world and not wanting to change a thing. Ideally for me, I would stay in my hometown for the rest of my life and be a successful songwriter writing country hits while spending time on the river with my parents and going out to the bar with my best friend to see all the NPC's. If I had all the money in the world I'd move right back and live my life exactly the way it was before I moved to Memphis.

Finding songs that remind you of your own life is always fun. These are a bunch of fun/silly songs that make me think of home and all of it redneck quirks. Hope you find them as relatable as I do!
